After too many sticky, damp and oppressive months - we finally get to change the atmosphere a bit.

Suddenly, as it gets cold outside, the inner feeling of many of us also changes.

Suddenly the squat on the couch in the living room is much more tempting, the unhealthy foods are the perfect consolation and also the corona threat becomes just another great excuse not to leave the house.

But in fact, it is precisely this season that many give up on physical training to cuddle up in front of the TV, is the one where exercise can affect them much more - and for the better of course.

So if you want to continue to use winter as an excuse to be lazy, you should stop reading - because we are going to refute this claim with the help of five super-convincing arguments:

1. It is the perfect reinforcement for the war on winter diseases

Feel your throat start to itch and your runny nose start to fill your nose?

In a situation like this, the first thing you will want to do is lie in bed and feel sorry for yourself - but believe it or not, this is the perfect timing to move yourself.

Contrary to many people's beliefs, exercising in the cold will not make you cool down - quite the opposite.

A 2006 study of middle-aged women found that when women walked or ran for an entire hour, they experienced relief from colds.

The researchers noted that exercise can speed up the activity of hormones in the body and cause the production of white blood cells that strengthen the immune system.

However, very intense activity during illness can actually weaken the body and prolong the recovery time.

So if you are really sick - it may be better to give up significant training that will exhaust you even more.

2. It may even improve corona defense

In recent months, several studies have been published that suggest that vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of complications and mortality due to coronary heart disease.

Although the results are inconclusive, vitamin D deficiency has been known for years as a factor that may affect the risk of various diseases, with an emphasis on upper respiratory diseases.

In fact, many Israelis suffer from a deficiency in this vitamin, although it is very easy to supplement it with a quarter of an hour of exposure to the sun every day.

Fortunately, while in Europe it sometimes takes long weeks to sunny days in winter - in Israel it happens almost every day this season as well.

Therefore, if you take advantage of this time when the sun's rays are hurting for physical training - you will be able to strengthen your health in another important and significant sense.

3. This is a great way to overcome the sadness that is so prevalent now

If we have not had enough reasons to be sad and depressed by now - in recent weeks we have received another reason that is perceived by many as inevitable.

It is estimated that about 20 percent of us suffer at one level or another from a phenomenon known as "winter depression" or in its professional and ironic name in English - SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder).

Over the years, many studies have been published that point to the link between exercise and improving mental state.

A comparative review, published in 2017 and examining 38 studies on the subject, found that it is enough to exercise for 10 to 30 minutes several times a week to notice a marked improvement in mood following exercise.

In a reality where most of us are at home anyway and not doing too much - it can make a significant difference that will affect how we go through the challenging months ahead.

4. It burns more calories

So true, we exercise to be healthier and calmer - but let’s face it - one of the main goals of this action in the eyes of many is to simply burn calories.

Well, a study on the subject and published in the journal Human Biology found that when we exercise in a cold environment, we burn more calories than in a warm environment workout.

The study found that participants burned more calories at an average rate of 34 percent when walking on a temperature of (10-) to (5-).

The reason for this, according to the researchers, is that in a cold environment, the body burns calories even in an attempt to warm itself.

Well, we know that even at the height of winter in Israel we will probably not reach these temperatures, but this study proves that cold training will not hurt your results - but will only help them.
