An alleged high-ranking member of the Sicilian Mafia has been arrested in the Heilbronn district.
The 37-year-old was arrested on Tuesday evening with the help of special forces, according to the police and prosecutors.
According to investigators, the man is considered dangerous and had been wanted with a European arrest warrant.
He is said to have been involved in organized drug deals and extortion in Italy.
Suspected lead member of Cosa Nostra
According to the Italian authorities, the arrested is a lead member of the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra.
He fled when he was about to be arrested in Italy.
Undercover investigations made it possible to identify his contact persons and thus find the man's hiding place.
The Italian anti-mafia agency DIA also supported the investigation.
According to the police, the arrested person has already been brought before a judge and agreed to his extradition.
Now the man is to be brought to Italy.
