Radiant white does not have to be an indication of the health of the teeth - but light pearly whites are an ideal of beauty.

Öko Test has examined how good whitening toothpastes are.

  • In front of the toothpaste shelf in the drugstore you are literally struck by a huge range of different products.

  • Almost every brand has at least one whitening toothpaste that is designed to whiten teeth.

  • Some of these products do well in the test -

but there are also many losers

    .

Bleaching at the dentist, home remedies such as baking powder or special toothpastes *: There are ways and means that can make teeth brighter and smile even more beautiful.

The latter option is the gentlest and cheapest way to make teeth appear whiter.

Much of the effect of whitening toothpastes is based on the fact that they remove discoloration caused by coffee, red wine or smoking, for example.

However, many whitening pastes cause medium to high abrasion, as the Stiftung Warentest informs.

This cannot harm healthy teeth, but it can damage exposed tooth necks and make teeth more sensitive

.

Anyone who notices this should change the toothpaste in consultation with the dentist.

In the case of activated charcoal toothpastes that advertise a whitening effect, the high abrasive power of the charcoal is probably responsible for the whitening effect, according to Stiftung Warentest as a state-sponsored consumer organization.

Since such toothpastes can attack the tooth enamel, they

are less suitable for pain-sensitive teeth

Marks five and six for half of the toothpastes tested against yellow teeth

The consumer portal Öko Test has taken a closer look at toothpastes that promise whiter teeth.

94 toothpastes were examined, with the focus on the promised whitening effects.

On the one hand, the testers scrutinized the ingredients,

including pyrophosphates against tartar, activated charcoal against deposits, bleaching agents and color pigments

.

But the caries protection by fluoride was also included in the assessment as well as the pollutants contained.

Gum problems?

The right toothbrush protects your weak point

The electric sonic toothbrush Oral-B Pulsonic Slim Luxe 4100 in rose gold (promotional link) is not only beautiful to look at: With gentle sonic technology and 62,000 brush head movements per minute, it removes more plaque than a conventional manual toothbrush and should ensure healthier gums in just four weeks.

The shocking result:

Öko Test can only recommend 16 products with “very good” or “good”

, around half of the 94 toothpastes fail with “poor” or “unsatisfactory” because of bad ingredients alone.

“More than half of the toothpastes for whiter teeth contain the problem substances sodium lauryl sulfate or polyethylene glycols and chemically related substances (PEG).

The foaming agent sodium lauryl sulfate is considered to be comparatively aggressive and can irritate the mucous membranes.

PEG can make the mucous membranes more permeable to foreign substances, ”says the Ökotest.de website.
