Twitter retires Periscope, the application it bought in 2015 that allows users to stream live video via smartphone.

The app, which has not kept pace with the most popular video platforms starting with TikTok, will be closed next March.

"We have seen a decline in app usage over the past two years, and we know that the cost of supporting it will continue to rise over time," the Periscope team explains in a post calling maintenance costs "unsustainable". "We still believe in the power of live video to solve impactful problems, which is why we've brought most of Periscope's core features to Twitter."
