Schmallenberg: woman gets into a circular saw and dies

An employee was fatally injured in a sawmill in Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The 23-year-old operated a large circular saw on Saturday morning.

A police spokesman said that she got caught between machine parts and was trapped.

The young woman died at the scene of the accident.

The machine is a so-called »trimming and recutting circular saw«.

This pulls tree trunks into itself via a conveyor belt and processes them further.

"The processing is done autonomously, one person controls the machine via a control panel," it said.

According to initial findings, the young woman was responsible for the control panel when she got caught between hydraulic parts of the saw and was jammed.

How it got into the machine was initially unclear.

According to the police, the criminal police and the occupational safety and health department of the Arnsberg district government have started the investigation.
