The Dutch government has suspended all passenger flights from the UK until January 1

, following the discovery in the Netherlands of a case of contamination with a new British variant of the coronavirus.

The Dutch Ministry of Health "recommends that any introduction of this variant of the virus be limited as much as possible, limiting and controlling the movement of passengers arriving from the UK".

Germany could also suspend flights from the United Kingdom and South Africa due to fears of the spread of the virus,

Meanwhile, British flight BA 560 from London Heathrow landed at Fiumicino airport, carrying about 110 passengers.

The health surveillance and control procedure has been activated for flights arriving at the Roman airports from the United Kingdom.

Any positive swab passengers will be transferred to Spallanzani for the monitoring and study of the possible variant of Covid.  

WHO Europe asks countries to "tighten controls"

after the discovery in Great Britain of a new variant of Covid-19, which would spread faster.

WHO also recommends its members to "increase sequencing capacity" of the virus to understand more about the risks posed by the variant, a spokesperson for the body said. 

 The "preliminary information" on the Covid variant suggests that "it could also affect the effectiveness of some diagnostic methods", in addition to the fact that "it could be more contagious", explains a spokesman for WHO Europe, clarifying however that at the moment there is no it is "no evidence of a change in disease severity".

The WHO, he adds, will provide more information as soon as it has "a clearer view of the characteristics of this variant"
