He almost became a Christmas baby: an elephant calf was born in the zoo in Osnabrück.

The birth was unproblematic, said a zoo keeper.

The Asian bull elephant named Yaro and his mother are doing well.

His weight was about one hundred kilograms at birth.

He was immediately taken up by the herd.

Yaro is the first baby elephant to be conceived in Osnabrück Zoo.

His mother Douanita had offspring for the sixth time and is already an experienced elephant cow.

The zookeepers had been expecting the birth for several days.

Douanita was constantly monitored by camera.

On Monday night the time had come.

At the moment, Yaro drinks and sleeps a lot.

But again and again he also explores his surroundings, they said.

Another birth is soon on the agenda at Osnabrück Zoo, because Douanita's daughter Sita is pregnant too.

Zoo keepers expect the birth in January or February.

Osnabrück Zoo is currently closed to visitors due to the corona crisis.
