Thielemann, 61, has directed the Staatskapelle Dresden since 2012.

He recently made a recording of the 8th Symphony by the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824 to 1896) with the Vienna Philharmonic.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Thielemann, what does a conductor do in lockdown?

Thielemann:

Yes ... this should actually read: "laughs sourly".

SPIEGEL:

Why?

Thielemann:

I made an awful lot of phone calls.

My battery is always empty in the evening.

You telephone the office, try to organize your work in Dresden, then you telephone Hinz and Kunz.

Then go up and down the garden once, go around the house.

SPIEGEL:

Would orchestral rehearsals still be possible in principle?

Thielemann:

I was just in Vienna to record Bruckner's 3rd Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic after the 8th.

The Vienna Philharmonic are tested every three days.

Before I went there, I was allowed to take a quick test here in Berlin.

When I arrived I was tested again.

Then we played three concerts in the Musikverein.

Before an empty hall.

Fortunately, the atmosphere turned up.

Then I had to go back and stay at home for five days, then I went back to the PCR test.
