(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 22 - The coronavirus has reached Antarctica, the only continent that has not had any case so far.

Thus the presence of the virus was recorded in all 7 continents.

The Chilean army, reports the BBC, has reported 36 cases of Covid-19 at its Bernardo O'Higgins research station in the Antarctic Peninsula.

The infected, including 26 military and 10 maintenance workers, were brought to Chile. The news comes just days after the Chilean navy confirmed three cases of coronavirus on a ship that carried supplies and personnel to the research station.

The S ArgentoAldea arrived at the station on November 27 and returned to Chile on December 10.

Three crew members tested positive on their return to the Talcahuano base.

Chile is the sixth most affected country in Latin America with over 585,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
