(ANSA) - STOCKHOLM, 22 DEC - Sweden continues to pursue the same strategy against the Covid-19 pandemic, despite the recent introduction of more severe measures to contain the infections: Prime Minister Stefan Lofven reiterated this.

"Can I understand the urge to ask: Has the strategy changed? No, the insubstantiality is exactly the same: make sure we keep the broadcast as low as possible," Lofven told broadcaster SVT.

"Obviously - he underlined - we must be able to make changes, according to the situation".

Sweden has made headlines around the world for its decision to combat the spread of the virus with largely non-coercive measures and by never imposing lockdowns seen elsewhere in Europe.

But in the face of a strong second wave and a rapidly rising death toll once again, the country imposed stricter measures during the fall, most notably a ban on public gatherings of more than eight people and a call to limit social interactions to one restricted circle.

Yesterday, for the first time during the pandemic, it banned entry from Denmark to prevent Danes from going to Sweden to shop.

New measures were introduced last Friday, including a ban on the sale of alcohol after 20:00 and a recommendation to wear masks on public transport.
