The ZDF New Year's Eve concert planned for December 30th in the Dresden Semperoper has been canceled due to the pandemic.
"After a detailed risk assessment in terms of health protection" of the participants, the production is not feasible under the current Saxon Corona Protection Ordinance, announced the ZDF.
Chief conductor Christian Thielemann and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden originally wanted to end the year with "lively and happy sounds", as the Staatskapelle wrote on its website.
The concert was to be recorded and broadcast on ZDF on the same day at 10.30 p.m.
In the last interview with SPIEGEL, Thielemann said: “The New Year's Eve concert in Dresden will take place.
But without an audience. "
Instead, the 2016 Semperoper Festival Concert will be shown.
Under the direction of Thielemann, soloist Nikolaj Znaider played the violin concerto by Max Bruch and works by Fritz Kreisler.
The Staatskapelle Dresden also presented overtures by Suppé, Rossini and Tchaikovsky.
For Thielemann, who is also music director of the Bayreuth Festival, the year ends in an exciting way.
As the festival announced, they want to keep him committed.
How, however, is still unclear.
"The Bayreuth Festival intends to sign a new contract with Christian Thielemann," announced the festival on Wednesday upon request.
"The tasks and the resulting title are still being clarified."
Thielemann has been music director of the Richard Wagner Festival since 2015, but his contract will expire in a few days at the end of the year.
