With the new pension allowance for basic security in old age, those affected can receive up to 223 euros more from 2021.

Find out more about the innovation here.

Everyone talked about the basic pension this year.

For millions of senior citizens *,

the new pension allowance

for

basic security in old age is

much, much more important.

Those who have received basic security up to now can receive up to 223 euros more per month thanks to the new basic security plus.

This means that basic security often no longer means falling to Hartz IV level.

Who can claim the tax exemption?

Anyone who has paid into the pension fund for at least 33 years and has a low pension.

The so-called basic pension times are decisive for the recognition of the tax exemption by the social welfare office: These include, among other things, all compulsory contribution periods from gainful employment including the periods of a mini-job subject to insurance as well as periods of child-rearing up to the child's tenth birthday, in the case of several children usually up to the youngest child turns ten years old.

Hundreds of thousands of senior citizens are

entitled to this old-age welfare

for the first time thanks to the new tax exemption

.

What does this mean for retirees who have to pay the high rents in Munich?

An example: A pensioner from Munich receives a gross pension of 1,300 euros.

Of this, 143 euros go for health and long-term care insurance.

That leaves 1,157 euros.

The basic security bill would be: 690 euros rent (not too much in Munich) and 468 euros standard requirement for single people (there is only that much in Munich): so a total of 1,158 euros.

One euro more than the pension.

But now the new allowance is taking effect

.

Our retirees don't need to calculate long.

From a pension of EUR 510, the social assistance is increased by a maximum of EUR 223.

So the pensioner now has 1,381 euros.

The new regulation will benefit many pensioners - even with very low retirement income.

With a pension of just 320 euros, social benefits are topped up by 166 euros.

Do I have to submit an application?

That depends on whether you already get

basic security

.

Anyone who is

entitled to

the

exemption

for the first time must

submit

an

application

.

Only those who apply for basic security in January can hope for an additional payment from the beginning of 2021.

Anyone who already receives basic security today will automatically receive an additional payment - without an application.

How does the Corona crisis affect the basic security?

Anyone who applies for basic security in old age in January 2021 will also benefit from the

special Corona regulation

for

easier basic security benefits

.

This applies to all applications submitted by the end of March 2021.

It is important to note that for a single person, financial assets of up to 60,000 euros are considered “not significant” and do not conflict with a basic security claim.

For every additional person who lives in the household, it is increased by 30,000 euros.

The appropriateness of owner-occupied property is also currently not being examined.

When will the money be paid out?

The fact that the payout has been postponed somewhat dims the joy of the new windfall.

Because the new claims can only be paid out after the German pension insurance has checked over 20 million pension accounts and determines who will get

33 basic pension years

.

Anyone who receives a pension for the first time from July 2021 will have their pension notification "enclosed with a list of basic pension times," explains Gundula Sennewald from the German Pension Insurance Association.

For everyone else it means: Wait - if necessary until the end of 2022. The social welfare offices are obliged to take into account the tax exemption if they can provide evidence of the basic pension periods.

The full amount will be paid later.

What about supplementary benefits?

The

allowance

is not charged according to federal labor ministry with the old pension allowance, which applies since 2018th

This old allowance can also be up to 223 euros.

It applies to additional old-age provision, i.e. to company pensions, Riester pensions, private pensions, but also to the part of the old-age pension that was acquired through voluntary contributions to the statutory pension insurance.

New pension exemption from 2021 - three calculation examples

Calculation example 1:

A pensioner with a net pension of EUR 850 is granted basic security on application.

He is allowed to keep some of the pension: 100 euros exemption and 30 percent of the rest. This makes an arithmetical 325 euros, but the exemption is limited to a maximum of 223 euros.

From 2021 he can keep this amount in addition to the social benefits.

So he has noticeably more to live in the coming year.

Calculation example 2

: A single pensioner received a gross pension of 600 euros so far.

That wasn't enough to live on.

The social welfare office stepped in, with basic security and rent.

So she had no more than any other Hartz IV recipient.

From January she will receive a basic pension.

250 euros more because she can prove 33 years of contributions.

It now has 850 euros - which is still too little.

So the basic pension alone doesn't bring her anything.

But the tax allowance: This is 223 euros for this pension.

This money remains with her in addition to the state benefits.

Calculation example 3:

A single florist with little pension will be better off in the future.

She worked full time for 40 years and earned 40 percent of the average wage.

She has a pension of 547 euros, plus a basic pension of 418 euros.

So she has 965.87 euros per month.

Nevertheless, her income on Hartz IV-Nivau drops because of the high rent.

In future, she will have an allowance of 223 euros in addition to state benefits.
