(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 23 - 36 years have passed since the Rapido 904 massacre: Sunday 23 December 1984, at 7:08 pm, a ordignon in the ninth carriage of the convoy exploded with a radio-controlled loader while traveling the 18 km of the Directly tunnel between Vernio and San Benedetto Val di Sambro, on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, places not far from that of the Italicus massacre of '74 (12 dead and 48 wounded).

The bomb on 904 caused 16 deaths and 267 injuries: the train had left Naples for Milan, loaded with people traveling for the holidays at the end of the year.

The anniversary was commemorated in Bologna taking into account the provisions for the Covid emergency.

Ilboss Toto 'Riina, who died in 2017, was the only defendant in Florence in the appeal process.

For the massacre, we were sentenced to res judicata, including that to life imprisonment of PippoCalò, a loyal loyalist of Riina.

In more recent times, a rereading of documents and investigations had led the Florence prosecutor's office to identify Riina as the alleged instigator of the massacre.
