(ANSA) - VENICE, DEC 24 - The Veronan city council meeting last night revoked the honorary citizenship of Roberto Saviano, which had been conferred on the Campanian writer in 2008. The proposal, presented by the Northern League councilor Alberto Zelger and signed by 9 other councilors, among which the president of the municipal council Ciro Maschio (FdI), was approved with 20 votes in favor, 7 abstentions and one against.
Among the reasons for the resolution to revoke the honorary citizenship, proposed a year ago, "Saviano's failure to thank the Municipality of Verona and the fact that he never showed his desire to come and withdraw it". Furthermore, Zelger motivated the revocation also with the praise to Carola Rackete and the "repeated expressions of contempt against the former minister MatteoSalvini with slanderous phrases" and also the fact of "having deployed in favor of the mayor of Riace".
