Climate: Wwf, let's save Christmas 2050

On the eve of Christmas with Covid, WWF affirms, in a note, that "this pandemic, like the other zoonoses, is the consequence of our impact on the planet: destruction of the forests where viruses have lived in equilibrium for millennia, markets that expose and they trade live wild animals in precarious hygienic conditions. We humans have to change. And a brake on global warming is becoming increasingly important, notes the environmental association. "In 2050 - continues the WWF - if we do not act vigorously to counter the climate crisis and, together with it, that of biodiversity, we will be faced with an even harder Christmas. (ANSA)

ROME - On the eve of Christmas with Covid, WWF states, in a note, that "this pandemic, like the other zoonoses, is the consequence of our impact on the planet: destruction of the forests where viruses have lived in equilibrium for millennia, markets that they exhibit and trade live wild animals in precarious hygienic conditions. We humans must change. "

And a brake on global warming is becoming increasingly important, notes the environmental association.

"In 2050 - continues the WWF - if we do not act vigorously to counter the climate crisis and, together with it, that of biodiversity, we will be faced with an even harder Christmas.

Continuing with the current models of energy production and consumption, scientists have estimated that the conditions in which Italy will find itself may be very different from the current ones.

First of all, in terms of temperatures, it will get hotter and warmer, even in winter.

The expected increases for average winter temperatures will reach + 1.5-2 ° C (compared to the period 1980-2010) in the Alps, and higher by 1 ° C in almost the rest of the country.

This will mean that Christmas on skis will be more and more a mirage, because the temperatures will be too high to guarantee snow and 4 out of 5 ski resorts will have ceased activities.

The Italian glaciers will be greatly reduced and many totally disappeared. "

On the other hand, according to the Panda association, swimming could also be done at Christmas, given that the average sea temperatures in winter will increase to 1.5-2 ° C in the Adriatic. However, the benefits will be few, given that this will be accompanied by an increase in the average sea level along the coasts of at least 7 cm by 2050, threatening the lower coasts and causing damage estimated at around 900 million euros.
