(ANSA) - TOKYO, 25 DEC - The Japanese Ministry of Health has confirmed 5 cases of the English variant of Covid-19 among a group of passengers from Great Britain.

Infections have been reported at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, and at Kansai Airport in Osaka.

There are four men and one woman, all under 70 years of age, who are currently in solitary confinement.

It is the first time that cases of the strain considered to be highly contagious have been recorded in Japan, and now the Japanese health authorities are working to trace the movements of the five positive individuals, tracing the contacts they had before the outcome of the test.

Since yesterday, the Tokyo government has imposed a ban on foreign tourists from entering the country on flights from the United Kingdom for work or study reasons.

British citizens with a residence permit in Japan will still be able to return, like Japanese citizens, by subjecting themselves to a tampon within 72 hours before flight departure.
