What employees need to know now.

Every employee who has ever been on sick leave knows it: the certificate of incapacity for work (AU) *.

With the “yellow certificate”, employees prove to their employer that they are ill and cannot perform their contractually stipulated work.

In return, they will continue to receive wages.

From 2021 this AU certificate will be phased out - at least in paper form.

The AU is to be digitized from October 1, 2021

.

As a first step, the doctor's practice sends the electronic certificate of incapacity for work (eAU) to the health insurance company.

From July 1, 2022, the health insurance companies should then also forward the eAU to the employer.

This means that

employees no longer have to worry

about

sending the two printouts

to their employers and health insurers.

Do I still have to hand in the AU certificate to the employer?

Until the complete changeover in 2022, employees will have to hand in the “yellow ticket”

to their employer in

2021

.

It is questionable whether this will still be yellow - the previous AU form will be replaced by simple printouts for insured persons and employers.

Technical problems and corona pandemic - switch to eAU postponed

Originally, the digitization of the certificate of incapacity for work was supposed to start on January 1, 2021.

But the changeover to the eAU is now taking longer than expected: the necessary

technology

will not be available in time for all practices and health insurance companies.

This is reported by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV).

In addition, medical practices and health insurance companies have their

hands full

with the

corona pandemic

.

That is why the KBV agreed with the Federal Ministry of Health and the health insurance companies that the mandatory date will be postponed by three quarters.

The date for the second step of the changeover, the dispatch of the eAU from the health insurance companies to the employers, was initially planned for January 1, 2022.
