In some regions of Germany there was still a white Christmas on the second holiday.

In Thuringia, for example, there was snow along the Rennsteig, as well as in the Black Forest and southern Bavaria.

Even in Berlin, snowflakes fell from time to time, but didn't stay there.

In the week before Christmas, double-digit temperatures were still measured in many areas.

Hurricane low over Germany

The snow is unlikely to last, at least beyond the mountains.

The hurricane low »Hermine« brings especially strong winds at the weekend.

  • According to the forecast of the German Weather Service (DWD), the highest wind forces are to be expected from Sunday night on the North Sea and in the low mountain ranges.

  • Actual hurricane gusts are only predicted over the open North Sea.

  • From Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland to Schleswig-Holstein, gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour are possible, and in exposed locations up to 85 kilometers per hour.

  • In the east, the wind is said to be weaker, in the south hardly anything could even be noticeable, with the exception of the high altitudes of the Black Forest and the Alpine peaks, where a foehn storm is expected to set in from Sunday afternoon.

The maximum values in the new week are likely to be zero to seven degrees, but night frosts are also possible, especially in the southeast.

Similar weather is forecast for New Years and New Years.

Avalanche danger in Austria

In the Austrian federal states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol there was a considerable risk of avalanches on Boxing Day.

"The main danger comes from new snow and drifting snow," reported the avalanche warning service of Vorarlberg, which borders Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Strong winds at higher altitudes as well as frost on the surfaces due to cold nights bring some danger in Tyrol: "Both represent an ideal weak layer for the drift snow deposited over it," according to the local avalanche warning service.

That means even individual winter sports enthusiasts could trigger avalanches.

Winter sports in Austria are currently largely reserved for locals and residents.

In order to prevent the coronavirus from spreading further, Austria has imposed a quarantine obligation for those entering the country and Bavaria for those returning from day trips.

This means that there is practically no cross-border ski tourism these days.
