Miriam Depping studied psychology in Berlin, Paris and Toronto and did her doctorate in Zurich. Today she lives and works in Hamburg.
SPIEGEL:
Ms. Depping, gifts are supposed to make you happy - why is the opposite so often the case?
How do I manage, for example, not to resent my partner's loveless last-minute gift?
Depping:
Do you know for sure that they didn't bother with the gift?
People just differ in their aesthetic sensibility.
Just because a person does not like something does not mean that the giver made the selection easy.
SPIEGEL:
But should someone who knows you well not be able to find something suitable?
Depping:
Many people do indeed have this ideal.
They expect their partner in particular to know what they want - possibly without ever having said it.
You want to be seen.
