There are various external characteristics that distinguish the person, from hair color and skin to the height and size of shoes.

However, there is one external characteristic that the people who share it have much more in common than we thought.

Researchers have found that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor that lived about 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Until today we knew that blue eyes are much rarer than brown eyes, but now that also makes sense, since scientists have discovered that the genetic mutation came from a single human from many, many years ago.

For many years researchers have desperately tried to understand the origin of eye color and studied the OCA2 gene, which determines the level of brown pigment in the human eye, but so far have not found the answers they were looking for.

They now know to determine that the genetic mutation that results in blue eyes is a completely different gene, called HERC2, that completely eliminates the OCA2 gene responsible for brown color.

The researchers concluded that they all share one ancestor in common, because every blue-eyed person has the exact same mutation.

Although there is much more research to be done, it can be estimated that the mutation spread as humans migrated from Africa to Europe, which may explain why only people of European descent have blue eyes.

The discovery was actually made as early as 2008, when a research team from the University of Copenhagen first located the mutation.

Professor Hans Iberg, author of the study from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, told Science Daily:

"Originally, we all had brown eyes but a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene on our chromosomes led to the creation of a 'switch' that literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes. People with green eyes may be the result of a reduced amount of melanin in the iris, which is very different from those with blue eyes. From this we can conclude that all blue eyes have the same ancestor. They will all inherit the same 'switch' in the exact same place in their DNA ".
