Precious Christian remains found in a secret room in the convent include what appears to be a nail used for the crucifixion of Christ.

Archaeologists working at the Milvesco Monastery in the Czech Republic found a six-inch piece of nail in a box decorated with a 21-karat gold cross.

The box was built between the years 260-416 AD and is engraved with the letters 'IR' meaning "Jesus is King".

According to experts, the secret treasury was used to hide rare objects from raids by Hussite forces in the early 15th century.

Researchers who have excavated the site say they cannot confirm whether the nail came from the same famous crucifixion, but noted that the discovery is even greater than the remains of St. Maurice, the Czech news agency (ČTK) reports.

A relic of Maurus is a large box made of gold that holds the fragments of the bodies of three saints: St. Maurus, St. John the Baptist and Timothy.

Jerry Schindler, who took part in the discovery, told ČTK: "Because the Hussites destroyed the archive, there was no information that such a thing even existed there."

He added that the source of the nail will be confirmed by another scientific expertise sometime next year.

Archaeologists have been working at Milvesco Monastery for several months and recently uncovered a secret passage leading to the treasury.

The monastery was built in 1187, but was conquered by the Hussites in 1420. However, before losing their place of worship, those who saw the monastery built a house in it a secret room to hide rare and precious objects.

After analyzing the box using carbon-14 dating, the team found that it was made of two types of wood.

A cedar tree, found in the subtropical climate of Israel, dating from 1290 to 1394 AD.

The second type is oak, found to have originated between the years 260 and 416 AD.

The nails found in Israel

A team of archaeologists found nails with ancient bone and wood embedded in them in Jerusalem, in a burial cave from the first century that is believed to have served as the resting place of Yosef Hacohen, but at some point after the cave was excavated in 1990, the nails disappeared.

Years later, filmmaker Simcha Jakubowicz claimed to have found the nails and even determined that they were used to crucify Jesus in the 2011 documentary, Nails Of The Cross.

At that time, the researchers refuted the hypothesis and denied that the nails found by Jakubowicz were those from the resting place of Yosef HaCohen.

Now a new study has found that nails are indeed the same nails - and that these were indeed used for someone’s crucifixion.

The lead researcher, Dr. Aryeh Shimron, found the surprising finding after comparing material from the nails with material from the ossuaries (limestone boxes used to store the bones of the dead) of Yosef HaCohen's tomb.
