Isolated in August at the Spedali Civili

- "A variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus similar to the English one, but earlier than that discovered in England, was isolated in the Brescia laboratories".

Professor Arnaldo Caruso, president of the Italian Society of Virology, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Brescia and director of the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology of the Spedali Civili, explains this to ANSA.

"The variant of the virus was isolated in August on an asymptomatic patient, who was not hospitalized at the Civil of Brescia, who had been struggling with covid for months. The situation intrigued us and now we can say that a variant could circulate in Italy virus similar to the English one. But for times it can be considered an ancestor of the English one ".

Professor Caruso then adds: "This variant has mutation points in the Spike protein, at position 501".

The virologist finally announces.

"We are working to understand if the vaccine is able to neutralize this variation of the virus as well. Personally I think so, but we have yet to verify it"
