The Chinese may be getting richer, but at the same time they are also getting fat.

A study by the country's National Health Committee found that more than half of Chinese adults are now considered overweight and obesity rates among Chinese adults have also doubled in less than two decades, from 7.1 percent in 2002 to 16.4 percent this year.

According to the report, 50.7 percent of Chinese adults are overweight, including those who are obese.

In a country of 1.4 billion, that amounts to more than half a billion people - more than the entire U.S. population. This is a sharp increase over the past two decades. In 2002, 29.9 percent of Chinese adults were overweight, including obesity. In 2012, that figure rose to 42 percent, according to previous reports released by Chinese health authorities.

This change is due in part to huge changes in diet and eating habits caused by the country’s rapid economic growth.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, in what was then called the "leap forward" program, there was a mass famine that was estimated to cause about 45 million Chinese to die of starvation.

Until 1993 people had to use food vouchers distributed by the government to obtain groceries like rice, oil, eggs and meat.

The days of food scarcity are long gone, and modernization, as well as the money that has entered the country, has introduced new and Western foods such as milk and bread into the Chinese menu, in addition to Western fast food chains.

Huge changes.

The problem is that an increase in the rate of overweight and obesity is another significant burden on public health.

Excess weight increases the risk of serious illnesses and health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke.

"The rates of overweight and obesity in China have climbed rapidly, with a high prevalence and affecting all population groups. This poses enormous challenges," said Zhao Wenhua, chief nutritionist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 4 million people die each year as a result of being overweight or obese.

Worldwide, obesity is also on the rise, almost threefold since 1975, according to WHO data.

In 2016, 39 percent of adults worldwide - or more than 1.9 billion people - were overweight, including more than 650 million obese.

In the United States, 71.6 percent of adults were classified as overweight, including obesity, between 2015 and 2016, according to the CDC.

One statistic worth noting before being stunned by the numbers in China is that while the World Health Organization considers body mass index (BMI) - weight to weight ratio - over 25 to overweight, and over 30 as obese.

In China, of course, more severe, and BMI over 24 is considered overweight, and over 28 are obese.

Still, this is worrying data.
