Climate: 2020, hottest year ever recorded in France

The year 2020 was the hottest recorded in France since the start of measurements in 1900, ahead of 2018, Météo-France announced Tuesday after an “extraordinary” year which gives a new sign of global warming.

In mid-December, Météo-France had already estimated this record probable, still awaiting data for December to confirm it.

Despite a “rather cool” start and end of December, the month ended up being rather mild on average, not allowing the trend to be reversed.

The year 2020 thus ranks at the top of the podium ahead of 2018 and 2014, with a series of extreme events throughout the year, from storms at the start of the year to exceptional rainy episodes in autumn, including two episodes of heatwave during the summer.

The first half of 2020 was already the hottest ever recorded in France with an average of 12.5 ° C.

The months of January, February and April saw particularly high monthly temperatures (as in 2007 and 2014 for that matter).

Another sign of global warming, of the 120 years since national averages were measured, nine of the ten warmest years are in the 21st century and seven in the last decade.
