A young man was seriously injured while making firecrackers in Schleswig-Holstein.

The winter garden, in which he handled the chemicals on Tuesday, was destroyed and the parents' house was significantly damaged, the police in Eckernförde said.

The 19-year-old suffered severe burns.

He had been brought to a special clinic in Lübeck.

According to a police spokesman, there is a mortal danger.

The explosion in his parents' row house occurred in the morning, according to the police.

The young man worked with the chemicals in the conservatory of the terraced house, which then exploded.

Neighboring houses were reportedly not affected.

"At first I thought of a naval maneuver, but it's never really that violent."

Residents in Eckernförde

Wehrführer Meint Behrmann from the Eckernförde volunteer fire brigade said the fire had already been out when the comrades arrived.

There must have been a jet of flame, but the fire probably extinguished itself due to the strong pressure wave.

The house was damaged in the explosion in the rear area to the garden, but is still habitable.

A resident told the online portal shz.de about the explosion: "At first I thought of a naval maneuver, but it's never really that violent."

In Schleswig-Holstein, the sale of fireworks is banned this year, as everywhere in Germany.
