Garbage collectors' strike in Marseille: the conflict is shifting to the legal field

The Bouches-du-Rhône police prefecture issued a requisition order, which was not respected by the strikers. The latter filed an appeal for interim relief.


Despite the intervention of a few first dump trucks, under police protection, garbage continued to accumulate on Tuesday in several districts of Marseille, on the 13th day of a strike movement by some of the garbage collectors which could now be played out on the judicial field.

A few hours after taking its requisition order, the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters deployed several CRS vans on Monday evening, in order to secure the site of the Polyceo company, a Derichebourg subsidiary in charge of collection of garbage in the 2nd, 15th and 16th arrondissements of the city.

This request will be examined Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. by the administrative court of Marseille.

According to the strikers, the requisition would be illegal, the employees belonging to a private company, even if the latter exercises a public service mission.
