(ANSA) - BRAZIL, 30 DEC - Arthur Virgilio, mayor of Manaus, capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, has defined the health crisis caused by the coronavirus in the region as "serious", where the care capacities of hospitals have been overwhelmed and the cemeteries could become saturated again .
"The situation is serious, it can lead to a brutal crisis, the agent is desperate" because there is no room in the hospitals and "people cannot be told to leave and return in two days", Virgilio told a radio station in Sao Paulo.
In the last 24 hours in Manaus, 112 people have been hospitalized for Covid, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic.
The mayor then stressed that the city must also face problems in the cemeteries, fearing what happened months ago, when the victims of the disease were buried in the common ditches.
Virgilio finally criticized the position of the president of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, regarding the vaccine.
"The president must stop setting a negative example by saying that he will not get vaccinated, as well as saying that he is against compulsory vaccination. Vaccination must be compulsory to avoid contagions," said the mayor.
