Corona births:

A comprehensive Israeli study, which covers seven hospitals across the country, shows that Corona patients did not infect their babies during birth despite carrying the virus.

The study examined 52 births of women infected with corona.

75% of them were normal vaginal births and the rest by caesarean section (the caesarean section performed for reasons unrelated to corona infection).

According to the results of the study, only one mother needed urgent caesarean section due to deterioration in her general condition as a result of corona-related complication.

It also depletes the fact that all babies born are not infected with the virus.

The study, led by Hadassah doctors and supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, investigated the mode of birth and its immediate effect on neonatal outcomes in women with coronavirus.

It was conducted at seven hospitals: Hadassah Ein Kerem, Hadassah Mount Scopus, Maayan Hayeshua, Ichilov, Sheba, Meir and Ziv in Safed, and it led to two main conclusions: Infected the newborns with the virus during birth.

"We are pleased to find that all of the newborns of the women in the study were examined near and after childbirth and were found to be negative for the coronavirus," says Dr. Amichai Rotenstreich of Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital and one of the study's leaders. .

He added: "The results of the study are of great importance to maternity patients in the corona, as they can expect a birth that will be similar to the birth in healthy mothers and there is no need to worry. Only in exceptional cases of severe and unstable disease, the corona virus will be a cause of caesarean section."

Prof. Benjamin Reubinoff, director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, also one of the leaders of the study, explained: "With the outbreak of the corona plague, many studies were published examining how the virus affects pregnant women and their fetuses." So far, there has been a significant increase in the rate of cesarean births among mothers with coronary heart disease. "

Prof. Yoav Yinon, director of the fetal medicine unit at Sheba Hospital: "This is a very important study because its results prove that vaginal birth in women with corona does not increase the risk of infecting the newborn, and that maternal infection in corona near birth is not an indication for cesarean section.

"Furthermore, there are data that indicate that a caesarean section may even aggravate the maternal disease, so efforts should be made, as far as possible, to give birth to women with corona in a vaginal birth."
