The director of the Beilinson Lung Diseases Division calls on the Basket Committee to incorporate the innovative drug Tricapta, which studies have shown to significantly help cystic fibrosis patients

Following the revelation in Israel Today that the corona epidemic is leading to a decrease in donations and organ transplants in Israel, Prof. Mordechai Kramer, director of the Lung Diseases Division at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, urgently asked the drug basket committee to add an innovative drug to the deadly genetic lung disease cystic fibrosis. CF).

Among other things, Kramer says, the drug improves the condition of patients and thus removes them from the queue waiting for lung transplants, which also grows every year.

Prof. Kramer is one of the top doctors in the field of lungs in Israel and this is the first time that the committee has been presented with a request to introduce a drug, also because it will shorten the list of people waiting for a transplant.

As revealed in October in "Israel Today" since the onset of the epidemic, in Israel, as in many countries around the world, there is a sharp and alarming decrease, up to 50%, in organ donations and transplants in Israel in all areas: heart, kidney, liver and lung.

These data emerged from unofficial and unconfirmed estimates of hospitals in the country.

According to data from the National Transplant Center, 1,235 are waiting this year for organ transplants, of which 124 are for lung transplants.

Prolongs life

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a very severe and deadly inherited disease caused by a damaged protein that causes severe damage to health and the ability to breathe as well as damage to other systems in the body including the pancreas and digestive system.

In Israel Today, the patients 'struggle to put the drug TRIKAFTA in the basket was revealed in August, which according to studies leads to a dramatic improvement in lung function and is expected to extend the patients' lives by up to 35 years.

The drug, which has already been rated high in the basket committee, is intended for about 120 patients a year in Israel and is very expensive and costs an estimated NIS 800,000 a year per patient before the special agreement that may be signed between the pharmaceutical company and the Ministry of Health and the HMOs.

The drug is manufactured by the American pharmaceutical company Vertex, which specializes in drugs for CF and is marketed in Israel by Madison.

Prof. Kramer wrote to the basket committee that "the disease shortens life and most patients die by the end of the fourth decade of life and lung transplantation, despite its short-term benefits, is accompanied by severe risks and complications and recently our patients sought to postpone transplantation due to improvement upon receiving the drug. "Patients in a severe clinical condition who have already received the drug have seen an unprecedented improvement and have been removed from the waiting list for transplants. In light of this, I would like to include the drug in the basket so that more patients are removed from the transplant list and have a healthier and longer life."

The basket committee said: "This year, about 880 drugs and technologies were submitted to the committee with a total cost of over NIS 3 billion. The tricapta drug is one of the drugs discussed in the committee and at this stage was ranked high in the first discussion phase. ".
