 After a gloomy and tragic 2020, there is need to hope that the upcoming year will be the year of rebirth and renewed encounter with the public for museums: many projects, many still being defined, that Italian cultural institutions propose for 2021, documenting different eras and languages, from ancient to contemporary painting to photography.


MILAN

- Palazzo Reale welcomes "The ladies of art" from 5 February to 6 June, in a path curated by Anna Maria Bava, Gioia Mori and Alain Tapié, unique in its kind and dedicated to some of the greatest artists who lived between the 16th century and '600, selected for their evident, unchanged modernity.

34 artists are on display - including Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Fede Galizia, Giovanna Garzoni - for a total of 150 works from 67 different lenders.


ROVIGO

- "When Gigli, Callas and Pavarotti ... The Historical Theaters of Polesine" is the exhibition set up at Palazzo Roncale from 13 March to 27 June, curated by Maria Ida Biggi and Alessia Vedova, from a project by Sergio Campagnolo.

With a fascinating photographic journey and archival materials, the exhibition celebrates the passion for opera, music and ballet of a territory made up of small villages such as that of Polesine, in which there was a high concentration of historical theaters , about 50, almost all born from the will of private groups who have taxed themselves to build them and then to support their activity.

Palazzo Roverella instead welcomes from March 20 to June 27 "Art and Music from Symbolism to the avant-garde", curated by Paolo Bolpagni: the itinerary documents the dense interweaving of relations between music and the visual arts in the contemporary age, from the symbolist season to to the thirties of the twentieth century.


FLORENCE

- For the first time modern art in the United States is told with reference to two decisive historical moments, the beginning of the Vietnam War and the attack of 11 September 2001: the great exhibition of Palazzo opens on 20 March Strozzi entitled "American Art 1961-2001", curated by Vincenzo de Bellis and Arturo Galansino.

The exhibition, set up until July 25, presents an overview of more than 80 works on loan from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, signed by 55 American artists (such as Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Barbara Kruger, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kerry James Marshall, Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, Robert Rauschenberg, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol) between painting, photography, video, sculpture and installations.

- Summer at the Buonconsiglio Castle will be in the sign of Galician Faith with the exhibition "Amazone in painting", curated by Giovanni Agosti and Jacopo Stoppa, from 2 July to 24 October.


    The important monographic, through the well-known still lifes but also with different themes, such as the representation of Judith exhibiting, on a tray, the beheaded head of Holofernes, celebrates a shy and reserved painter, who has recently returned to the prestige of which he had enjoyed in life.


GALLARATE (Va

) - "Impressionists. At the origins of modernity" is the main exhibition event of 2021 for the MaGa: from March 12 to September 5, 180 works by the major exponents of French and Italian painting of the second half of the nineteenth century, from Gericault to Courbet , from Manet to Renoir, from Monet to Cézanne to Gauguin, to Boldini and De Nittis, coming from Italian and French public and private collections, will document some central knots of the movement's poetics, from the 'academy-realism' dialectic to the renewed attention to nature , from the first images of modern life to the departure from the impressionist lesson towards a symbolist language.


  MILAN

- Great excitement in 2021 at the Pinacoteca di Brera, with two main exhibitions that will enliven the new year: in March "Le fantasie di Mafai" will be held, a project dedicated to the cycle consisting of 23 small paintings with which Mario Mafai, in a a true act of denunciation of the war and of Nazi-fascism, it represented the massacre of the Hotel Meina which took place on Lake Maggiore in 1943.
