British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will address the nation tonight from TV screens to formalize the already announced new anti-Covid squeeze in the face of the latest surge in infections in the United Kingdom, at the rate of over 50,000 a day, also fueled by variants of the coronaviruses most recently identified.

This was announced by Downing Street, specifying that the Tory government has also decided to reconvene Parliament on Wednesday before the official end of the Christmas break to discuss new measures and ask for a support vote.

Today in the country a new daily record of infections: the cases recorded in the last 24 hours reach 58,784 out of a number of swabs which rose yesterday to almost 430,000.

The data, which is accompanied by the confirmation of renewed pressure on many hospitals in the country waiting for the new national lockdown or semi-lockdown to be announced tonight at 8pm on TV by the premier, is fueled by the spread of new variants of the virus with accelerated diffusion.

Even if the daily total of deaths drops to 407.

"If we look at the numbers there is no doubt that tougher measures need to be taken," Johnson said today during a visit to London's Chase Farm Hospital - to celebrate the launch of Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccinations following Pfizer's prototype of a month ago on the island - evoking "very hard weeks" before vaccines can affect the general population.
