Barack Obama
used social networks to publicize the emotional gift that his wife
Michelle Obama
gave him
, which was very significant for the former president of the United States.
Through his Instagram account, Barack revealed that the gift is a drawing of Hole 12 in Augusta Nacional, a piece by the artist
Valentino Dixon
, who has a very particular life story.
"It is an incredible piece, but the story behind it is even better," wrote the former president next to a photograph in which he is seen appreciating the drawing on an electronic tablet.
Obama went on to explain that the African-American artist, who was residing in New York, was wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit, and sentenced to a minimum of 38 1/2 years in prison when he was 21 years old.
"For more than two decades behind bars, he maintained his innocence," he wrote referring to Dixon.
"Over time, he renewed his passion for art thanks to the advice of his uncle, who told him: 'If you get your talent back, you can get your life back."
"Even though he never visited a golf course, he used magazine photos to draw golf courses like the one in this photo," the former president added.
"Dixon's art and history gained national attention in 2012 through the tireless advocacy of his family and a couple of profiles in golf publications," Obama continued.
"Then in 2018, three students from the Georgetown Innocence Project discovered evidence proving the innocence that Valentino had maintained all along. And after 27 years, he was free."
"Today Valentino travels a lot to share his story and promote the need for criminal justice reform. And fortunately, for me and many others, he continues to draw. I am very proud to have one of his works to show," it was like Obama concluded his message.
For his part, Dixon shared a video of the commissioned artwork on his Instagram account, explaining that he originally created the hand-drawn piece with colored pencils while in prison, but that he always came back and touched it up, because "a work art is never complete. "
"Michelle Obama came to buy a golf drawing for Barack Obama. It was an honor and a privilege," he wrote with the publication.
"This drawing took over 400 hours and I think it is the largest golf drawing in the world, measuring 60 inches by 90 inches," he added.
