Ski areas: a mayor fights against the crowd

2021-01-04T14:07:36.515Z

People don't keep their distance, pee in front gardens and leave their rubbish lying around: The rush in the ski areas annoys many mayors - including Steffen Korell from Gersfeld in the Rhön.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Korell, people flock to the ski areas, keep no distance from one another, park wildly and pee in front gardens.

How do you find this behavior?

Steffen Korell:

I have two small children myself, and my four year old daughter always wants to go into the snow.

I can understand that a particularly large number of people are now drawn to the ski areas.

Corona prevents many leisure activities, people want to offer their children something.

And for the first time in three years we have a lot of snow around the Wasserkuppe, from 450 meters above sea level it is white.

Everything below is green and a different world.

But as beautiful as the snow may be, I urgently appeal to people to stay at home.

We still have very high numbers of infections.

Health protection takes precedence over leisure time.

SPIEGEL:

What is currently still open for you?

Korell:

Hotels and restaurants are closed, the ski lifts are out of order.

Actually, only cross-country skiers can use the trails without any problems.

Thanks to the skis, they have enough space in front of and behind them.

They just have to be careful not to get too close to people in the parking lots.
