(ANSA) - BEIJING, 05 JAN - South Korea recorded for the first time in 2020 a higher number of deaths than births, which slipped to new lows, exacerbating the phenomenon of the rapid aging of society.
According to the data of the latest census released by the Ministry of Interior and Security, the population as of December 31st stood at 51,829,023 units, with a decrease of 20,838 people compared to the end of 2019, the first in the series developed on homogeneous standards.
A turning point that is not surprising and moreover expected given that in the last decade the population has increased at an increasingly slower rate: in 2010 growth was 1.49%, while in 2019 it stood at just 0.05%.
In 2020, the births were 275,815, with an annual slowdown of 10.65%, compared to deaths which rose to 307,764 units, an increase of 3.1%.
