Vaccination: China, United States, Israel, Italy… Where are the other countries in their campaigns?

2021-01-04T17:04:59.355Z

While criticism is raining on France's slowness, several countries have already reached one million injections. To see more clearly

During the traditional wishes of December 31, Emmanuel Macron denounced the "unjustified slowness" of the vaccination campaign officially started in France.

And for good reason, on January 1, 2020, France announced that 516 people had been vaccinated.

A figure which is pale in the face of 118,000 doses administered in Italy or 265,986 in Germany on January 4.

💉 516 people received a first dose of the vaccine on January 1, @le_Parisien learned.

A figure including the weekend could be announced tonight. # Covid19

To coordinate this feedback, a comparison is carried out by the “Our world in data” teams with institutional sources in 36 countries.

Thus, the figures available to us were published between December 27 and January 4, depending on the state.

Consent, logistics, doses… Six questions on the slowness of vaccination in France

Some vaccines are administered in two doses, the site specifies that many countries only offer visibility on the number of doses administered, and not on the number of people vaccinated.

But the differences are such that they give an idea of the most proactive countries in this area.

Thanks to this data, we were able to map the millions of vaccines already administered in early 2021.

Millions of doses already injected in China and the United States

China will have been the first country struck by the Covid-19 epidemic, it will also have been the first to start vaccinating.

To date, two products are still in the testing phase and three are in circulation.

One is produced by a state-owned company, Sino Pharma, another by Can Sino, linked to the army, and the last by Sino Vac, a private company which announced that it had completed the construction of a "capable factory. to produce 300 million doses per year ”and this, at the beginning of September 2020, that is to say four months ago… A technical, industrial and logistical advance which is not for nothing in the 4.5 million doses administered in China on the 31st December 2020.

The first country to fall victim to the epidemic, the United States is not far away, with 4.2 million people having received a first injection on January 2, 2021. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the most ahead are California, Texas, Florida and New York State, heavily affected by the epidemic.

Still according to the CDC, more than 13 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are already in the circuit, ready to be injected.

Israel in search of collective immunity

A third country seems to stand out largely from the comparison: Israel.

By the 1,224,000 doses already administered on January 4, 2020 (the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine), and especially by the size of the population already covered.

Populated by only 8 million inhabitants, the Hebrew state has already vaccinated 13.8% of its population according to a tweet from the Minister of Health, Yuli Edelstein, posted on January 4 in the morning.

As a benchmark, according to several experts, collective immunity would be reached around 60% of the vaccinated population.

In this game, Israel is far ahead of the world rankings, ahead of Bahrain, with 3.6% of the population covered and the United Kingdom with 1.4%, according to data released at the end of December.

Given their colossal populations, the United States and China still have some way to go, with 1.3% and 0.3% of the population respectively having received at least one dose of vaccine.

France still far behind

Seen from France - with its 516 people bitten on January 1 - these countries have already moved into a new phase in the fight against the epidemic.

But the situation should change rapidly in the coming weeks, if we are to believe the 500,000 doses delivered each week promised by the government in our columns.
