Women in Hollywood: women directors were more successful than ever in 2020 - but the rate remains low

2021-01-04T18:22:42.491Z

Since 2018, the proportion of women among directors has quadrupled - to just 16 percent. More and more women are also involved in other jobs behind the camera. But the progress is minimal.

The share of women behind the scenes in the American film industry has never been higher than in 2020. Women directors were more successful than ever in 2020, and women writers, producers, production managers, editors and camerawomen were also involved more often than ever before.

Only: Their share has only increased minimally for years.

For example, in the 100 most successful films in 2019, a total of 20 percent of the employees were women, in 2020 it will be a full 21 percent.

In 2016 it was 17 percent - and thus as little as in 1998.

Since 1998 the "San Diego State University's Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film" has been investigating how many jobs on film sets are occupied by women.

For the “Celluloid Ceiling” study, the scientists look at the data from the top 100 and top 250 American films that made the most profits in each year.

In the pandemic year 2020, figures from the “Watched at Home” ranking from March to December were also included.

Analogous to the term “glass ceiling”, »celluloid ceiling« describes the underrepresentation of women in creative positions in Hollywood.

The film industry has changed since the Weinstein Affair shook Hollywood.

But it is still a long way from equality.

Women remain underrepresented in direction, script, production or editing.

This is shown by the figures of the study for the past year - incidentally a year in which numerous prestige productions such as the new James Bond adventure "No Time to Die" were postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.

A look at the numbers of the

100 best-selling films in 2020

:

  • Proportion of

    women

    directors:

Women directed 16 percent of the films.

An increase of four percent over the previous year.

Compared to 2018, the value has quadrupled.

  • Share by industry

: women producers (28 percent) performed best, followed by executive producers (21), editors (18), directors (16), screenwriters (12) and camerawomen (3).

  • Decline in authors and editing:

women made up only 18 percent of all editors in 2020.

In 2019 it was 23 percent.

In any case, the proportion of women among the authors was only 12 percent, a decrease of eight percentage points compared to the previous year.

The majority of the 250 top-selling films in 2020 (67 percent) employed a maximum of four women.

24 percent came to five to nine women, only nine percent of the films employed ten or more.

In contrast, 71 percent of productions had ten or more men working.

The most successful female directors by study standards include Cathy Yan ("Birds of Prey"), Greta Gerwig ("Little Women") and Jennifer Lee ("Frozen II", together with Chris Buck).
