The archipelago of Palau, in the Pacific Ocean, is one of the few places on Earth spared from Covid-19 and aspires to become one of the first countries with full vaccination coverage against the disease, according to CNN.

The republic of Palau, with around 18,000 inhabitants, received the first shipment of the vaccine developed by the US pharmaceutical company Moderna on Saturday.

The vaccinations began the next day, the health ministry announced on Twitter.

The load includes 2,800 doses of the vaccine that will be administered in two stages, 28 days apart.

The first to receive the vaccine will be health workers, officials and groups considered vulnerable, according to the ministry.

To date, Palau has not recorded a single case of Covid 19 or death related to the virus, according to the World Health Organization.

In January, when the virus began to spread in Asia and the Pacific, Palau was among the first to implement stricter border controls: the borders were closed in March and citizen tests began in April.
