(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 04 - After the success of last year, Veganuary, the largest initiative in the world to sensitize people to eat less meat, is also back in Italy.

Veganuary, a name that comes from the union of the words Vegan and January, is a challenge that invites you to try eating vegetables for a month.

Those who register on the website www.veganuary.it will receive a daily support email throughout January with indications of each type: how to shop, simple recipes, practical advice and nutritional information.

This year, for the launch of Veganuary, over 100 entertainment figures, companies and NGOs have signed an open letter inviting us to reflect on the two major global threats we are facing - climate change and a global pandemic - and their link to our diet .

Signatories include former Beatles Paul McCartney, comedian Ricky Gervais, supermodel Lily Cole, Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and ethologist JaneGoodall.

Also this year, the organization Be Animals will be the official partner of the project in Italy.

The NGO covers that farming is responsible for about 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions generated by humans.

Farms have already produced H1N1 (swine flu) and H5N1 (bird flu), the latter with a 60% mortality rate.

To feed animals on farms, we need to produce more than a billion tons of food every year.

In recent years, more than 80% of deforestation in Brazil has been destined for grazing by farmed animals.
