The corona pandemic determined the year 2020 and changed the habits of Germans, apparently also their viewing habits.

Because more people in Germany watched television than in the previous year.

According to an evaluation by AGF Videoforschung, 72 percent of people aged 14 and over tuned in daily, 3.1 percent more than in 2019. The working group measures TV ratings for local TV stations.

On average, viewers watched 220 minutes of television every day (2019: 210 minutes).

TV usage is not only growing year-on-year, but also against the downward trend of recent years.

This is especially true for the younger target groups.

The average viewing time for 14-49 year olds was 137 minutes, almost the same as last year.

This “stabilization” is “remarkable”, since younger target groups in particular are increasingly “consuming video content regardless of time via streaming platforms and using classic linear TV more selectively”, according to the AGF announcement.

Merkel brings odds

One reason for the generally high ratings is the increased interest in information in the pandemic.

"Considered at the monthly level, we observe a clear connection between the development of viewing time and the development of the corona pandemic in this country," according to the AGF.

In March and April as well as during the second shutdown in November and December, the average viewing time was significantly higher than the values of the previous months.

The speech by Chancellor Angela Merkel in March 2020 reached more than 36 million people across all offers and devices that are subject to AGF measurement.

The New Year's address was also able to increase by around five million viewers to over 15 million compared to the previous year.

Interest rose by as much as 70 percent among 14-49 year olds.
