Öko-Test examined 20 toast for harmful substances.
Contamination with mineral oil components was found in eight toasts.
Toast
is popular as a snack or breakfast
bread
.
You can top it sweet with Nutella or jam or savory with sausage and cheese.
If you are not one of those people who even bake your own toast *, you can probably buy it in the supermarket.
But be careful: some
toast have a mineral oil problem
, as Öko-Test has now found out in a test.
Öko-Test examines toast: mineral oil and high acrylamide values
20 toasted breads
were tested for
harmful substances
by Öko-Test
and tasted, including products from Aldi, Penny and Lidl, but also well-known brands such as Golden Toast.
Whole-grain
toasts
in particular were checked
, but also other toasted breads and spelled bread for toasting.
The result: some defects, especially
residues of pesticides and mineral oil
were found.
In two organic toast breads, the level of mineral oil contamination is so high that they fail the eco test.
Öko-Test also criticizes other ingredients: the toasts from Penny and Rewe, for example, had comparatively
high acrylamide
values when toasted golden brown
.
Acrylamide is a carcinogenic substance that forms when roasting.
For this reason, you shouldn't toast your bread too dark either!
Öko-Test
also
rates
the
salt content
in two toast breads as too high: The "Herzberger Bio 100% Whole Grain Toast Bread" and the "Ammerländer Bio Whole Grain Sandwich"
contain more than 1.2 grams of salt per 100 grams of toast.
Reason: Permanently high salt consumption can promote high blood pressure and thus secondary diseases such as strokes.

Backhaus Bioland Whole Grain Toast |
inadequate |
45 milligrams of mineral oil components (MOSH) per kilogram. |
Ammerländer organic wholemeal sandwich |
insufficient |
In addition to MOSH, aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH) were also detected. |
To explain:
MOSH
(mineral oil components) accumulate in human organs.
That is why their content in food should be as low as possible.
The problematic group of substances
MOAH
(mineral oil hydrocarbons) can also include carcinogenic substances.
But how does
mineral oil get
into toast
?
Öko-Test names technical white oils as a possible source, which are used as
lubricating grease
on machines during production.
The manufacturers of the two toasted breads that failed in the test were contacted and announced that they would investigate the causes or have already remedied them.

Tips for the correct storage of toasted bread
Once opened, store toast
in a
bread box
to prevent mold.
It gets stale in the fridge.
Even if only one slice of the toast pack is moldy: Don't eat the other slices either.
Mold spores can spread quickly even if you can't see them.
You shouldn't eat charred bread because of its acrylamide levels.
Even if you scrape off the top dark layer, it won't remove all the pollutants.
Toast bread is great to freeze: Simply place small portions in freezer bags in the freezer and, if necessary, simply defrost and toast the slices in the toaster.
