Many people use illegal websites to watch series instead of accessing Netflix & Co.

This content was the most downloaded in 2020.

Important NOTE

If any series or film is offered for free on a website, please check immediately whether it is illegal.

According to a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), streaming content on illegal platforms is a criminal offense.

Streaming on sites like Netflix, Prime Video or Disney + is allowed, on the other hand, provided you have a subscription as a user.

It's a rather sad list, but it says something about the popularity of series.

As in previous years, the TorrentFreak portal has compiled a ranking of the

most frequently illegally downloaded series

.

The front runner of the last few years, "Game of Thrones" *, is not even in the top 10 in 2020. That is not surprising, since the series ended in 2019.

Instead, productions that have received new seasons in the past few months share the first places.

What is astonishing is the fact that

not a single Netflix original is

on the list.

Instead, the ranking is dominated by Disney and Amazon content as well as series produced by American TV stations.

Ranking of the most illegally downloaded series in 2020

This time the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” by

Disney came in first

.

In 2019 she took 3rd place and has obviously been able to work her way up in the past few months.

“The Boys” from

Amazon

and the SciFi series “Westworld” were also

downloaded frequently

.

TorrentFreak does not give concrete figures.

The portal points out, however, that not all downloads on illegal sites could be evaluated anyway, as some operators do not indicate their number of clicks.

Accordingly, the following list only provides a rough picture of the actual download hits.

  • "The Mandalorian"

    (available on Disney +)

  • "The Boys"

    (available on Prime Video)

  • "Westworld"

    (available on Sky)

  • "Vikings"

(available on Prime Video / Netflix)

  • "Star Trek: Picard"

    (available on Prime Video)

  • "Rick & Morty"

    (available on Sky / Netflix)

  • "The Walking Dead"

(available on Sky / Netflix / Prime Video)

  • "The Outsider"

    (available on Sky)

  • "Arrow"

    (available on Netflix)

  • "The Flash"

Illegal downloads: why are series streamed outside of the established platforms?

Thanks to streaming services such as

    Netflix

    ,

    Prime Video

    ,

    Sky

& Co., it is now possible to access a variety of content completely legally.

Why are there still people who use illegal sites?

TorrentFreak assumes that it is precisely this amount of legal platforms that drives viewers to free sites.

Since multiple subscriptions cost a lot of money, series fans may run the risk of entering gray areas under criminal law.
