Despite the fact that vaccines against the coronavirus are being administered in many countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Monday that
herd immunity will not be achieved during 2021.
"We are not going to achieve
any level of population
immunity or herd immunity in 2021," Soumya Swaminathan, WHO chief scientist, told a news conference.
Simultaneously, he insisted on the need to
maintain hygiene and distancing measures
, and the use of chinstraps to mitigate the Covid-19 epidemic.
The specialist praised the "incredible progress" made by scientists who participated in the development of several safe and effective vaccines against the coronavirus in just one year.
But he stressed that rolling out vaccination campaigns on a large scale
"takes time."
"
It takes time to increase the production of doses,
it is not only a question of millions, but here we are talking about billions" of doses, he said, and asked the population to be "a little patient."
US President-elect Joe Biden received a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Monday.

Swaminathan said that at some point "vaccines will reach all countries."
"But in the meantime, we must not forget that there are measures that work," he recalled.
According to her, the hygiene and distancing measures against the coronavirus should remain in force,
"at least, for the remainder of the year."
