(ANSA) - VENICE, 12 JAN - The threshold of 500 million bottles of Prosecco Doc certified in the space of a year was exceeded in 2020.

"This is a historic milestone - comments the president of the Consortium, Stefano Zanette - but it certainly does not constitute a point of arrival. In fact, there are many challenges that still await us, starting with the one regarding the segmentation of offer with a greater characterization of the productions also from an organoleptic sensorial point of view, without forgetting the actions already started some time ago, aimed at improving the perception of the denomination, with particular regard to the environmental and social sustainability of the entire DOC Prosecco territory ".

Despite alarmist news on the trend in the consumption of sparkling wines, DOC Prosecco managed to close the year with a growth of 2.8% compared to the certified volumes in 2019, in absolute values an increase of just under 14 million bottles . The newly created rosé type in particular recorded a production of 16.8 million bottles, in line with forecasts.

The average sales value of Prosecco Doc on the shelf is in line with the expectations of the Italian and international consumer: the share of the product sold at "entry level" prices represents a marginal fraction (around 4%).
