"Bruce Willis has to leave the store because he's not wearing a mask," announced Page Six, the gossip column of the New York Post, on Tuesday.
And already the "Die Hard" star had an image problem.
A photo of the incident made the rounds on social networks, outrage arose.
"Why didn't he just pull up his scarf?" Asked one commentator.
The actor was photographed on Sunday when he went to a pharmacy in Los Angeles without mouth and nose protection and came out again without one.
An employee is said to have asked Willis to leave the store, according to Page Six.
Acting so negligently in times of rising corona infections was unacceptable even for many of the actor's fans.
"People are dying and Bruce Willis refuses to wear a mask in a pharmacy," wrote the writer Shamar English on Twitter.
"If you applaud him for his stubborn and callous behavior, you are also clowns," he said and posted a short video to this effect.
When asked about his faux pas by People magazine, the 65-year-old Willis was remorseful: "It was a mistake in the assessment," he said.
"Take care out there, everyone, and let's keep wearing masks."
The US state of California has more than two million Covid 19 infections - 930,000 of them in Los Angeles County alone.
