Traffic stands still, people are told not to leave their homes, schools are closed, and many Spaniards do not go to work.
This time the reason is not Corona, but the weather.
Spain is experiencing a historic onset of winter.
Teruel Airport in the north-eastern region of Aragon is also affected.
Snow plows work the tarmac and runways so that a kind of flight operation can take place here.
The cause of the weather chaos is the storm Filomena.
In Vega de Liordes around 400 kilometers north of Madrid, Spain's lowest temperature ever was measured at minus 35.8 degrees on Thursday.
Madrid itself experienced the heaviest snowfalls in decades, falling up to 60 centimeters.
In the meantime, the metropolis was completely paralyzed.
More than 800 soldiers helped clear the city streets.
Many residents are still lending a hand.
The onset of winter harbors serious dangers: tens of thousands of trees have collapsed under the loads, and masses of snow lying on roofs can turn into blocks of ice and slide down.
Five people have already died as a result of the extreme weather conditions, most recently two homeless in Barcelona.
