Cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates - German companies have asked for these application documents for decades.
But in 2021 a trend seems to have finally established itself.
New job, new luck: the job search could be so nice if it weren't for the
annoying application process
.
It is about as popular among job seekers as a root canal treatment at the dentist.
Even updating and compiling the usual application documents * is a strain on your nerves: What needs to be on the résumé?
Which certificates belong in the application portfolio?
And what do I write in the cover letter?
Trend reversal in application documents
At least about
cover letters and
references, employees in Germany will soon no longer have to worry about their heads.
Because the documents that were previously considered mandatory are being required by fewer and fewer companies in Germany.
This was the result of a study of the Taledo recruitment platform.
This trend reversal thus appears to continue in 2021.
For their study, the job experts from Toledo examined the online
application processes of
the 50 financially strongest start-ups and the 50 largest corporations with the highest turnover
for IT positions
.
The question: Which application documents are really required?
The result should surprise many.
Cover letter in the application is becoming less important
As has become apparent in recent years, the
cover letter is
still on the decline: Only 20% of the start-ups examined explicitly request a letter of motivation from applicants when applying online for IT jobs.
According to the Toledo study, it looks even better for large corporations: Only 18 percent of the 50 companies with the highest turnover asked for a cover letter; in January 2020 it was around a third.
The dream job still requires a
letter of motivation?
This is how you inspire with the first sentence in your cover letter.
References are rarely in demand with startups
Testimonies
play at startups actually almost no role
: Only four percent of surveyed startups insisted to see the evidence of their applicants, the investigation further revealed.
More than two thirds did not even offer the opportunity to upload the certificate.
With the large corporations, however, there is a different picture: For one in ten of the 50 companies examined, the application cannot even be sent without uploading the certificates.
At 86 percent, references are only optional for the application.

Large corporation or start-up?
These are the differences in the application process
“German corporations are gradually realizing that
traditional application procedures are hopelessly out of date
.
Applicants and the HR department prefer lean and, above all, efficient application processes, "says Marcel Poelker, founder and CTO of Taledo.
Large companies and startups value different factors.
Poelker explains the differences as follows: “Large corporations often work
data-driven
in the application process
- especially in the IT sector.
Good grades and degrees are also relevant for start-ups, but applicants should have a certain mentality and
motivation,
”explains the expert.
CV remains the most important document when applying
The study clearly shows that the most important document for the application is still the
CV.
Here you can find out what belongs in a perfect résumé and what you should definitely pay attention to.
