At least three people were killed in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Another 24 people were injured in the quake, reported the civil protection authorities.

The Reuters news agency speaks of seven dead and hundreds injured.

The epicenter of the quake was about six kilometers northeast of the city of Majene at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Dozens of houses were damaged in the quake.

About 2000 people are considered homeless.

The quake shook the island at 1:28 a.m. local time.

It was strongly felt for about seven seconds but did not trigger a tsunami warning.

In addition, several landslides have been reported in the region, reported the civil defense.

The damaged buildings include two hotels, the governor's office and a shopping mall, journalist Sudirman Samual in Mamuju province told Reuters.

At least one route to Mamuju was cut off due to damage to a bridge, he said.

The Pacific Ring of Fire

There are always strong earthquakes in Indonesia.

The Southeast Asian island state is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet and the seismic activity is particularly high.

In 2018, around 4,300 people were killed in a magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami in Sulawesi.

Even more devastating was a quake with a magnitude of 9.1 followed by a tsunami on Christmas 2004. At that time, around 220,000 people died in several countries on the Indian Ocean, 170,000 of them in Indonesia.
