Working parents who have to look after their children due to closed schools and daycare centers now receive additional childhood sick days instead of a special corona leave *.
And retrospectively to January 5, 2021. The Bundestag decided.
Only the Federal Council still has to give its approval.

Who is entitled to childhood illness days?
Working parents are not only entitled to childhood illness days for sick children, but also during the
Corona measures
if
care at home is
required.
About if
School, day care center or the facility for people with disabilities
is closed due to a pandemic
,
individual classes or daycare groups
must be
in quarantine
,
if the facility is open but authorities have
suspended the
requirement to be present,
when parents are asked
to look after
their children
at home if possible due to the
pandemic
.
This also explicitly applies if
parents work in the home
office.
The prerequisite is that parents are employed and have
statutory
health
insurance,
are entitled to sickness benefit themselves and have to
look after
a
child under the age of 12
.
This age limit does not apply to children with disabilities.
Anyone who can hire someone from the same household to look after them is not entitled.
Privately insured parents and parents entitled to subsidies must assert their entitlement under Section 56 of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG), the federal government announced on its website.
How many childhood sick days do families get per year?
In 2021, fathers and mothers will each receive
20 children's illness days
per year and child
, i.e. a total of 40 children's illness days per child for couples.
Single parents receive double entitlement, i.e. 40 days per child.
From the third child, the entitlement increases by another 10 days to a maximum of 90 days of childhood illness.
Other children in the family are not counted.

Do I have to apply to my employer for the childhood illness days?
The entitlement to child sickness benefit does not depend on the consent of the employer, so no separate application is required.
However, the employees must
inform
their supervisor
immediately that they are taking childhood illness days
.
“What immediately means always depends on the individual case - for example, how quickly or since when an employee knew that he was not getting the care needed elsewhere,” says Björn Otto, specialist lawyer for labor law at the law firm CMS Germany Press agency (dpa).
How do I apply for child sickness benefit?
To apply for child sickness benefit,
all you need
is a
certificate from the institution or school
that it is closed or not attended.
Submit the certificate to your health insurance company.
