Hungary, dissatisfied with the slow arrival of vaccines in the EU, intends to order 1 million doses of the Chinese vaccine.
Premier Viktor Orban announced this on public radio.
The product would be that of Sinopharm, used as well as in China in various parts of the world, from Turkey to Argentina.
The European Commission spokesman said the EU has no information on the Chinese vaccine and there are no contacts on the matter with China.
Orban is soliciting the authorization of the product from the Hungarian pharmaceutical authority, and intends to act by circumventing EU rules.
In Hungary, the Covid vaccine (by Pfizer and Moderna) has so far been administered to 1% of the population, but there is no real vaccination plan. Public opinion is disheartened by the government's smoky communication and rather hostile to vaccines. About 38% of the population say they want to get vaccinated, but still not with the Chinese or Russian vaccine.
