Before voting to open a second impeachment case against President Trump, members of the National Guard take a nap in the Capitol, under the watchful eyes of the Pilgrim Fathers.

After the images of the storming of Parliament had previously shocked the world, security measures have now been taken to prevent further incidents of this kind.

House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi presented the document that opens the impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

In the vote in the Congress Chamber on Wednesday, 232 MPs voted for impeachment, including ten Republicans.

Trump is the first president to face two impeachment runs during his term in office.

The chances of success are unclear and largely depend on how many Republicans can be won over.

In addition, there is the question of whether Trump may have to fear legal action after the end of his term in office.

A group of autonomous groups gathers for a counter-demonstration near a march of Trump supporters in San Diego, California.

The existence of anti-fascist groups, however small in number, has repeatedly served Trump as an excuse to discredit the Black Lives Matter movement and whip up its supporters, as well as to legitimize the violence of right-wing groups.

Coffins are piled up in the Meißen crematorium: With more than 500 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants, the district of Meißen is one of the regions in Germany worst affected by the corona pandemic.

The reasons for the difficult situation in Saxony are complex.

However, the thesis that the high incidences are related to the sympathy of the population for the AFD in Saxony cannot be proven, as my colleague Julia Köppe writes.

The active ingredient of AstraZeneca has been vaccinated in Great Britain since January 4th, approval in the EU in January is considered unlikely.

Onset of winter in Spain: In Bustarviejo, about 50 kilometers north of Madrid, neighbors have come together on the street to enjoy the unexpected snowfall together.

With the latest national average around 250 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants with the corona virus, it does not seem advisable to be close together, even in the fresh air.

The storm "Filomena" is the worst winter storm in Spain for 50 years and has brought heavy snowfalls and freezing cold to large parts of the country.

The cold snap in Europe is a catastrophe for people who do not have a solid roof over their heads.

These men eke out their existence in the remains of the Lipa camp, in the Bosnian Bihac, near the Croatian border.

Large parts of the camp for refugees were destroyed in a fire.

Even before that there was no heating, electricity or running water in the camp.

Most of the former 1500 residents now live in the surrounding forests and are fighting against freezing.

»An avoidable tragedy« - as the report of my colleague Maximilian Popp makes clear.

New year, new chess: Dr.

Zbigniew Kokosinsk, professor at the Cracow University of Technology and proud inventor of diagonal chess, poses for a photo.

In the chess variant newly developed by Kokosinsk, the kings stand in the corner, protected by several rows of pieces, which should make it easier for beginners to survive against more experienced players, because knowledge of the opening positions plays a lesser role.
